Volume Units

Volume Units: useful in the pool, in the kitchen and in the car.

Volume Units.

The use of volume units is as or more frequently than from the time, distance and weight, and are also widely used in domestic daily life.

Like the rest of the basic units of Measurement Systems, and also despite the pressures for Standardization of a single system based on the metric decimal units, there are some countries that continue to use the units derived from the English system: the Imperial System and thegaspumpnozzle US Customary Units.

Definitely, the total change take long since, although children in those countries are receiving basic education on the basis of that change, the roots we have adults is very hard to overcome. It is somewhat similar to the languages and their learning, we “think” the units of measure in the “old” way.

For now, we will try to help you learn new words equivalent in Spanish, only that, to avoid confusion, we will do this using different tables.

Volume Units / Unidades de Volumen
English Symbol Español Símbolo
millilitre ml mililitro ml
centilitre cl centilitro cl
decilitre dl decilitro dl
litre l or lt litro l
dekalitre dal decalitro dal
hectolitre hl hectolitro hl
kilolitre kl kilolitro kl
gallon gal galón gal
quart qt cuarto qt
pint pt pinta pt
fluid ounce fl oz onza fluida fl oz

But… in the Kitchen….

Small units, mostly used in recipes, pharmacies, laboratories, etc. have different units for identify the measures of volume:

Volume Units / Unidades de Volumen
English Symbol Español Símbolo
cup cup taza tz
tablespoon tbs cucharada cda
teaspoon tsp cucharadita cdta

Volume units 1Finally, we should point out that both in English and in Spanish, in the case of the volume, are very used the expressions “cubic” as description of the equivalence to the capacity of a cube’s dimensions of certain length, width and height.

In such cases, measures of length required are used and are accompanied by the adjective “cúbico”, “cúbica”, “cúbicos” or “cúbicas” as the case of number and gender, as is the case with all adjectives in Spanish.

Units of Weight or Mass

Units of Mass or Weight . A lightweight problem to solve.

Units of Mass or Weight.

The units of Mass or Weight are also widely used in situations that are repeated on a daily basis. As well as the units of length or distance, and despite pressures for Standardization of a single system of measures based on the metric decimal units, there are some countries that Units of Mass or Weightcontinue to use the units derived from the English system: the Imperial System and the US Customary Units.

As we know that the change will be gradual, we need to know the names of the units of the two systems in both languages, and will leave for teachers of Physics and Mathematics, the issue of conversions and equivalences between the various units.

Mass Units / Unidades de Masa
English Symbol Español Símbolo
milligram mg miligramo mg
centigram cg centigramo cg
decigram dg decigramo dg
gram g gramo g
dekagram dag decagramo dag
hectogram hg hectogramo hg
kilogram kg kilogramo kg
tonne ton tonelada ton
ounce oz onza oz
pound lb libra lb

Notes:

As if the units of length or distance, Institutions that dictate the rules about the Systems of Measures, also favoured  us standardizing symbols or abbreviations of units in both languages.Units of Mass or Weight

As a curious note we comment that workers in the field, in the majority of Latin American countries, are still using some weight units that are obsolete, even in the countries of origin of such measures.

The first case is the of the unit equivalent to the Quarter US (25 lbs), that in the majority of these Latin American countries is known as “arroba” and whose symbol is @.

The second case is the equivalent to the US Hundredweight unit or Quintal (100 lbs), that in the majority of Latin American countries is known as “quintal” and whose symbol is qt.

Units of Distance

Units of Distance or Length. Closer to this useful knowledge.

Units of Distance or Length.

When we talk about units of measure, one of the first that come to mind are the units of distance or length. In everyday life we use them with great frequency, and sometimes without realizing, by the natural and common use.

But the need to know when it comes to speaking, listening, reading or writing in another language, appears very quickly because it is difficult to convey with synonyms, graphics, etc.

In addition, and to the time difference, where the units of measurement are the same for all countries, in the case of all other units of measure exist the aggravating circumstance of the existence of three different systems of units of measurement: what we call the Decimal Metric System, Imperial System of Measures and the US Customary Measurement System.Lenght Units of distance

Although at international level there is some controversy regarding the advisability of using a single system, on our website we will not get to question the use of one or another system. Simply we see the basic units of measurement of the three systems in the case of Length or Distance, the Mass or Weight and Volume.

As with the Time, we’ll do it using tables, and only make additional observations which may be necessary. Nor will try of define them equivalences, and only work with the translation of the units of distance.

Lenght Units / Unidades de Longitud
English Symbol Español Símbolo
millimeter mm milímetro mm
centimeter cm centímetro cm
decimeter dm decímetro dm
meter m metro m
dekameter dam decámetro dam
hectometer hm hectómetro hm
kilometer km kilometro km
inch in pulgada in
foot ft pie ft
feet ft pies ft
yard yd yarda yd
mile m (mi) milla mi

Easy, right?

Fortunately, and thanks to agreements between the institutions that give guidelines on Measurement Systems, abbreviations of the units in both systems are the same. As a result, we always have the option, at least when writing, using symbols commonly in both languages.

A trip through the time units

Time Units. A journey through “the time” in Spanish

Time Units

In this Post we will see a summary of the equivalent time units between English and Spanish, and by the characteristics of this information will do so through a simple table with comparisons.

Only special enlightenment that we believe necessary in regard to units in general is relative to what we wanted to call the mini-units and thetime units in sand maxi-units.

The evolution of humanity, have also evolved the levels of detail with which the man measures and count things. Thanks to the technological evolution and the means used to measure and count, today we can talk about figures describing measurements or very large quantities and units of measurement and, in the same way, we can describe very small quantities and measurements. And this applies to almost all it measurable or accounting, and is thus for both languages.

Fortunately, and without discussing the origins, most of these “extreme measuring units” are built with prefixes that are common to both languages, so we will only make the relevant clarifications in cases in which it is required.

On the other hand, there are countless measurements of time associated with specific facts, culture, customs, etc. that exist in some languages and not in others, and such cases abound in Spanish, so we will also mention the most used although they do not have equivalents in English.

As the intention of our Tips is to facilitate reader understanding of the Spanish language in any of the cases in which can be found, we will try to be more explicit and comprehensive as possible but trying “not to complicate” long explanations.

See our “Table of the Time”.
